The nonprofit research group OCEARCH confirmed four great whites that are being tracked were spotted off the coast of the Carolinas recently.
Two of them are big! Detected on the South Carolina coast, a 12-foot, 9-inch great white named Caroline was close to shore off Edisto Beach.
The biggest, Luna, was out 80 to 200 miles southeast of Charleston, she is 15 feet long and weighs in at 2,137 pounds!
This is common for great white sharks to be tracked off the Carolina coast during their summer migration. “As the water warms up down south, they’ll push north,” OCEARCH founding chairman Chris Fischer said.
Fischer also says there is no need for beachgoers to fear the travels of great whites, but anyone who enjoys coastal waters should be aware of their presence.
