Vera, a 8 year old dachshund/pit bull mix, landed at the local shelter as a stray.
Soon after arriving a microchip was found so it was thought perhaps a happy reunion was in her future! Sadly Vera’s owners never came to reclaim her from the shelter and she was left – scared and afraid. Once rescue was called to claim her she had earned a ‘red card’ on her cage because the fear was taking over. Her rescuer stepped up to the cage and Vera let out a low growl, distrustful of what her rescuers intentions might be. With each step Vera took out towards the door, then towards the gate and the rescuer’s car – Vera’s face lit up with excitement because she full understood she was finally safe!
Sweet Vera has obviously lived a rough life before landing in the shelter. She acts as if perhaps she has suffered abuse at some point as she can cower out of fear. But once this sweet girl knows she is safe, her personality truly comes out and shines!
Vera is house-trained, crate-trained and working on learning some basic manners (she learned how to ‘sit’ in a matter of minutes). Vera would do just fine in a home with another dog – preferably one that would love to play! And while Vera much loves cats – she thinks she would like to taste them so a home without a kitty would be best for everyone.
Vera is shy at first in new situations but blossoms once she learns that she safe – she quickly becomes the life of the party. Vera has been hanging out at local pet friendly establishments around town and has won a “good doggy” award everywhere she goes. She is polite and relaxed — and just sits back and enjoys the party. She doesn’t bark while out and is extremely polite to all she meets. We have also been incredibly impressed with her ability to run zoomies in the backyard — this girl LOVES to play!
Vera is a unique girl with features that are hard to pin – she has short legs and a long body of a dachshund but the smile, head shape and stature of a Staffordshire terrier! Vera loves to snuggle and burrow like a dachshund, and has a love of her people like a Staffy.
Now it is time to find this girl her happy-forever-after. Are you seeking a unique dog that will brighten your day just by looking at you with her big smile? Vera is spayed, current on vaccinations, on heartworm prevention, microchipped and has had a dental – all ready to go to her new home!
